A pop provocateur and powerhouse vocalist, Lady Gaga was born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta in New York City in 1986. Raised on the Upper West Side of New York and classically trained on piano, she got her start playing downtown clubs before breaking out with her 2008 debut The Fame, which spawned electro-pop hits like “Just Dance” and “Poker Face.”
Gaga set herself apart with her eccentric music style, over-the-top fashion, and commitment to campy performances. Her 2009 album follow-up, The Fame Monster, delivered her biggest hit, “Bad Romance,” and one of the best pop diva crossovers ever, “Telephone,” with Beyoncé. That era cemented her status as a pop icon unafraid of forging her own path. With 2011’s Born This Way, she delivered a mantra-filled, synth-pop manifesto for self-love.
Though critics didn’t get it at the time, her 2013 album ARTPOP has since become a cult favorite and her most underrated body of work. She followed it up with the stripped-down Joanne, the A Star Is Born soundtrack (which earned her an Oscar for “Shallow”), and the 2020 project Chromatica, which featured Blackpink and Ariana Grande. Her most recent album, Mayhem, has received rave reviews for her gothic-dream return. In 2025, Gaga headlined Coachella with a theatric performance that engaged each of her past albums — and underlined why she is a once-in-a generation pop star.
Since her rise to fame, the singer has received 14 Grammys, including Best Pop Vocal Album for The Fame Monster, Best Dance Recording for “Poker Face,” and most recently, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for “Die With a Smile” with Bruno Mars.
Beyond music, Gaga is also an actor. Her first leading role in A Star Is Born received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. She recently stepped into the DC Universe as Harley Quinn in Joker: Folie à Deux, appeared as The Countess in American Horror Story: Hotel, and is soon set to star in the second season of Wednesday. —Tomás Mier
