Floyd, a 46-year-old African-American man, died on 25 May after being detained by police officers in Minneapolis (Minnesota), USA. Video footage recorded by bystanders appeared to show MPD officer Derek Chauvin forcefully kneeling on Floyd’s neck for several minutes while the latter pleaded that he couldn’t breathe. Chauvin has since been arrested and charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. Outrage over this new alleged killing of an unarmed black man at the hands of US police has spread across the country and abroad, giving rise to spontaneous protests in many cities over the past week.

"I was born on the south side of Chicago. My country preacher grand uncle predicted I would be a preacher or a doctor. I ran away from the idea of being a doctor. I ran away from the idea of being a minister. And by the time I was 31, 32, I realized I had run into it with my poetry, and that my voice, the music, the poetry were channels to offer healing to people. I had become a spoken word artist with a poetry jazz ensemble, Ancestor Energy. Audiences responded so powerfully that I realized spiritual healing energy fueled everything I did as poet, educator, counselor, community organizer and environmental activist.
I was kind of surprised when I got a call because, you know, I keep getting this message, “You’re a healer you’re a healer, you’re — you’re a minister. You’re a shaman, you’re this you’re that.” But I know I haven’t gone through training to be either a preacher or a shaman. But some people who are have come to me off and on through my life and given me pieces.
So, I feel like I can’t deny it.
I’ve got to allow myself to step into it and maybe come up with my own language to talk about what I do. But the purpose of the music, of the poetry, of the group processes, of the counseling, is to help people heal and become whole and to treasure the purpose for their birth — to realize that all of these things in nature have our gifts or have a purpose. I feel the major challenge is to define and reclaim indigeneity for rebirth of the world."{{/image:caption}}{{/image:image}}{{image:image}}{{image:loc}}https://www.rollingstone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/Community-Healers-Minneapolis_NR_RS0002.jpg{{/image:loc}}{{image:title}}Community-Healers-Minneapolis_NR_RS0002{{/image:title}}{{image:caption}}Louis Alemayehu,

“On the top level there’s confusion and fear.
if I really sink down I actually feel focused. I feel connected to people more than ever before. I feel guided more than ever before. I feel like there’s a lot of work ahead. I feel tired. But I don’t feel alone — at all. I feel like there are so many arms around me right now. Support is coming out of the seams in my life. As long as I don’t let the fear win, I feel like we’re doing the most important work of our lives right now.
Living in protest for me looks like, finding my corner of this work and staying it, not trying to be everywhere. Figuring out what feels nourishing for me to do right now, that I can sustain in the long run that is aligned with my values. Everyday I ask how does my belly feel? What does my heart want to do today?
For me, protest has been making tea and soups, bone broth. It has been noticing when my mental capacity is maxed out and making a shift into some other roles that I can continue to contribute with my strength. Working from my strengths, not my weaknesses, is to make sure being in communication with the people who are on the front lines even if I’m not directly there. I hold them in my heart and I am actively.”{{/image:caption}}{{/image:image}}{{image:image}}{{image:loc}}https://www.rollingstone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/Community-Healers-Minneapolis_NR_RS0004.jpg{{/image:loc}}{{image:title}}Community-Healers-Minneapolis_NR_RS0004{{/image:title}}{{image:caption}}Ihotu Jennifer Ali,

we’re organizing today a healing justice statement about the protests and COVID-19. We hear the word resilience a lot. Resilience isn’t the capacity to just bounce back. But it’s a way to — in practice during really traumatic crisis — regulate your nervous system each day so that when this is over, your nervous system doesn’t work against you. That’s a really big concern for me. And all the healing work — this is something I see a lot of and it makes sense. We have not had the resource for care, for health and well being here that other cities have.{{/image:caption}}{{/image:image}}{{image:image}}{{image:loc}}https://www.rollingstone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/Community-Healers-Minneapolis_NR_RS0007.jpg{{/image:loc}}{{image:title}}Community-Healers-Minneapolis_NR_RS0007{{/image:title}}{{image:caption}}Amoke Kubat, CEO, Artist, Educator

"I am an Iyanifa, priestess of Osayin, Yemoja and Olokun. Much of my work is about reconnecting people of African descent to the Primordial and First Worlds; the Realm of Spirits, Ancestors, Ori, and all of Nature’s domains. I was born with the ability to “ see” and “hear” . I had no idea that others did not. I was born with the ability to “ see” and “hear” . I had no idea that others did not.
At 69, I remain curious about self, the natural world, and the Sacred. Self taught, I use art-making and writing to continue to define myself and hold a position of wellness in an America sick with inequalities and inequities.
For 30 years, I have been reclaiming an African Indigenous Spiritual sensibility. Every people were once indigenous to some place, with their own understanding of their relationships to the natural world and to all living things. Enslaved Africans were not settlers, immigrants or refugees. Our complicated Black experiences disenfranchises us from self and Nature. Our ways of knowing and deeply respecting Earth were disrupted, discouraged, devalued, and distorted. Reclaiming our Indigenous ways, our relationship to all living beings, is a pathway to healing.
Healing is work. Sustaining wellbeing is hard work. Social determinants impact health and wellbeing.Poverty, unequal access to healthcare, lack of education, stigma, and racism are underlying, contributing factors of health inequalities. Then there is lack of access to good food, rest and leisure. For Black people, the 400 years of racism, anti-blackness, and white supremacy have been health determinants."

Living in protest for me is about having a practice of embodied liberation. This society, this culture in the United States is really, founded on and rooted in white supremacy. White supremacy capitalizes off of control. Part of my work as a global Somatics practice and having the background that I have in community organizing, has brought me to a place of wanting to really support my community and understanding healing justice– Black, Brown, Queer and Trans bodies, looking for healing and finding healing within our selves and in our own communities. And knowing that this, the dominant system, doesn’t create a space for us to be able to access the fullness of ourselves without constantly having to fight against the weight of these oppressive forces. It really brings in the understanding to that you can’t heal unless these systems are healing and shifting and changing.{{/image:caption}}{{/image:image}}{{image:image}}{{image:loc}}https://www.rollingstone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/Community-Healers-Minneapolis_NR_RS0010.jpg{{/image:loc}}{{image:title}}Community-Healers-Minneapolis_NR_RS0010{{/image:title}}{{image:caption}}Christie Marie Owens

"I am a teacher in the community. I teach at the elementary school down the street from 38th and Chicago. And so, I feel like I really micro examine how I show up because of the responsibility I feel to the children in the area.
A lot of people are probably thinking about, how do they show up because now’s the time where your natural gift or skill can be really useful for the larger community. And one person really needs to be aligned so that they can offer that to their whole community and everyone thrives, you know. And that’s what we want for children, I think for everyone to reach their biggest brightest, you know, selves.
what I keep coming back to in this movement was the opportunities that exist for teaching and learning from each other, just being present, from generations within the community, you know, when you think about teacher and student, when you think about what different cultural groups can learn from each other, like everything to me is about teaching and learning. And we are, you know, we have capacity to mutually sustain each other.
We’re grieving. We’re fighting for Black life. We’ve been hurt. And I think that takes the form and shape — or like a different form and shape for everybody. And I hope that everyone does the work they need to do to heal. I am a dancer and I trained in Indian movement forms. Yorchhā is the name of the contemporary movement form I created by intersecting the principles of movement from Odissi, which is a classical dance from the eastern side of India with Vinyasa yoga, the yoga of flow, and Chhau, a martial arts from Orissa, too. I merge them so that we could have a form that allowed for softer energies, more femme articulations along with a warrior energy — very strong and showing up with a lot of feminist power. So, bringing all that together in order to tell the stories of Black and brown women in our communities and globally has been my work.
At this point, though, I find that the need is to look at how movement can heal. So, because I’m a dancer, I understand that sometimes things are understood intellectually. But, sometimes, I feel that I need to create bodily practices of holding–bodily practices which become second nature and then become part of our daily interaction.{{/image:caption}}{{/image:image}}{{image:image}}{{image:loc}}https://www.rollingstone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/Community-Healers-Minneapolis_NR_RS0014.jpg{{/image:loc}}{{image:title}}Community-Healers-Minneapolis_NR_RS0014{{/image:title}}{{image:caption}}Ananya Chatterjea

Our farming collective that I’m a part of is called Divine Natural Ancestry or DNA. It’s me and two other queer Black bodied, kinfolk. And our purpose is to reconnect with the land to heal our bodies from trauma and just the disassociation for solace, collectively through generations of oppression, and also demanding reparations to do this work to provide free food to our community.
we’re also growing food on the Northside right now and helping to distribute food from farmers that we’re friends with that are outside of the city, both in Wisconsin and in rural Minnesota. So our mission is to dismantle white supremacy in our bodies by reconnecting to land and the healing properties that it offers us and also, yeah, just reparations and connection.
And that feels really important to me right now while in the midst of a revolution to still find time to not only be fight or flight in the frontline, but having the frontline also integrate into the importance of taking time off, the importance of resting, the importance of foods, sustainability long term for our communities, and even just collective education{{/image:caption}}{{/image:image}}{{image:image}}{{image:loc}}https://www.rollingstone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/Community-Healers-Minneapolis_NR_RS0016.jpg{{/image:loc}}{{image:title}}Community-Healers-Minneapolis_NR_RS0016{{/image:title}}{{image:caption}}Sarah Maricha White

And that feels really important to me right now while in the midst of a revolution to still find time to not only be fight or flight in the frontline, but having the frontline also integrate into the importance of taking time off, the importance of resting, the importance of foods, sustainability long term for our communities, and even just collective education{{/image:caption}}{{/image:image}}{{image:image}}{{image:loc}}https://www.rollingstone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/Community-Healers-Minneapolis_NR_RS0004Lede.jpg{{/image:loc}}{{image:title}}Community-Healers-Minneapolis_NR_RS0004Lede{{/image:title}}{{image:caption}}Ihotu Jennifer Ali,

I hold them in my heart and I am actively.”{{/image:caption}}{{/image:image}}{{/url}}{{url}}{{loc}}https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-pictures/juneteenth-oakland-2020-boots-riley-angela-davis-brandon-ruffin-1018145/{{/loc}}{{lastmod}}2020-06-20T17:01:16+00:00{{/lastmod}}{{changefreq}}monthly{{/changefreq}}{{priority}}0.7{{/priority}}{{image:image}}{{image:loc}}https://www.rollingstone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/01-Longshpreman-Juneteenth-0091.jpg{{/image:loc}}{{image:title}}01-Longshpreman-Juneteenth-0091{{/image:title}}{{/image:image}}{{image:image}}{{image:loc}}https://www.rollingstone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/02-Longshpreman-Juneteenth-0014.jpg{{/image:loc}}{{image:title}}02-Longshpreman-Juneteenth-0014{{/image:title}}{{/image:image}}{{image:image}}{{image:loc}}https://www.rollingstone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/03-Longshpreman-Juneteenth-0079.jpg{{/image:loc}}{{image:title}}03-Longshpreman-Juneteenth-0079{{/image:title}}{{/image:image}}{{image:image}}{{image:loc}}https://www.rollingstone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/04-Longshpreman-Juneteenth-0042.jpg{{/image:loc}}{{image:title}}04-Longshpreman-Juneteenth-0042{{/image:title}}{{/image:image}}{{image:image}}{{image:loc}}https://www.rollingstone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/05-Longshpreman-Juneteenth-0082.jpg{{/image:loc}}{{image:title}}05-Longshpreman-Juneteenth-0082{{/image:title}}{{/image:image}}{{image:image}}{{image:loc}}https://www.rollingstone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/06-Longshpreman-Juneteenth-0012.jpg{{/image:loc}}{{image:title}}06-Longshpreman-Juneteenth-0012{{/image:title}}{{/image:image}}{{image:image}}{{image:loc}}https://www.rollingstone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/07-Longshpreman-Juneteenth-0024.jpg{{/image:loc}}{{image:title}}07-Longshpreman-Juneteenth-0024{{/image:title}}{{/image:image}}{{image:image}}{{image:loc}}https://www.rollingstone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/08-Longshpreman-Juneteenth-0086.jpg{{/image:loc}}{{image:title}}08-Longshpreman-Juneteenth-0086{{/image:title}}{{/image:image}}{{image:image}}{{image:loc}}https://www.rollingstone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/09-Longshpreman-Juneteenth-0029.jpg{{/image:loc}}{{image:title}}09-Longshpreman-Juneteenth-0029{{/image:title}}{{/image:image}}{{image:image}}{{image:loc}}https://www.rollingstone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/10-Longshpreman-Juneteenth-0054.jpg{{/image:loc}}{{image:title}}10-Longshpreman-Juneteenth-0054{{/image:title}}{{/image:image}}{{image:image}}{{image:loc}}https://www.rollingstone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/11-Longshpreman-Juneteenth-0071.jpg{{/image:loc}}{{image:title}}11-Longshpreman-Juneteenth-0071{{/image:title}}{{/image:image}}{{image:image}}{{image:loc}}https://www.rollingstone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/12-Longshpreman-Juneteenth-0077.jpg{{/image:loc}}{{image:title}}12-Longshpreman-Juneteenth-0077{{/image:title}}{{/image:image}}{{image:image}}{{image:loc}}https://www.rollingstone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/13-Longshpreman-Juneteenth-0065.jpg{{/image:loc}}{{image:title}}13-Longshpreman-Juneteenth-0065{{/image:title}}{{/image:image}}{{image:image}}{{image:loc}}https://www.rollingstone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/14-Longshpreman-Juneteenth-0022.jpg{{/image:loc}}{{image:title}}14-Longshpreman-Juneteenth-0022{{/image:title}}{{/image:image}}{{/url}}{{url}}{{loc}}https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-pictures/juneteenth-washington-dc-million-moe-march-moechella-1018248/{{/loc}}{{lastmod}}2020-06-21T16:53:02+00:00{{/lastmod}}{{changefreq}}monthly{{/changefreq}}{{priority}}0.7{{/priority}}{{image:image}}{{image:loc}}https://www.rollingstone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/01-IMG_4778.jpg{{/image:loc}}{{image:title}}moechella{{/image:title}}{{image:caption}}Dancing
