Floyd repeatedly said, “I can’t breathe,” while onlookers begged the officer to let his knee up. Floyd was detained for allegedly trying to use a counterfeit $20 bill at a store and he was unarmed. As the video spread on social media, Chauvin and three other responsible police officers were fired, the FBI launched a civil rights investigation, and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension also launched an investigation of its own. In the wake of the death of Floyd, protestors took to the streets chanting “I can’t breathe”–a rallying cry of police brutality–echoing the familiar words of Floyd and Eric Garner, who died at the hands of the police force in New York in 2014.

Thousands of peaceful protestors first gathered on May 26 to march from the site of Floyd’s death to the Minneapolis Police Department’s Third Precinct. For the third night in a row, protestors march around downtown Minneapolis, demanding justice and an end to police violence. "Say his name. George Floyd," protesters chanted. "I can’t breathe." The video shared on social media shows protesters stopping their march at one point, kneeling and raising a fist in a moment of silence. "These officers, they need to be arrested right now, the people want justice right now," Philonese Floyd, George’s brother, told CNN on Thursday morning. "They need to be convicted and get the death penalty.”{{/image:caption}}{{/image:image}}{{image:image}}{{image:loc}}https://www.rollingstone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/10663113r.jpg{{/image:loc}}{{image:title}}Police Death, Minneapolis, United States – 28 May 2020{{/image:title}}{{image:caption}}St. Paul Police officer holds a rubber pellet gun while looking at a crowd, in St. Paul, Minn.
