Behind the Scenes of Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves’ ‘Waiting for Godot’

In 2020, Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter starred in Bill and Ted Face the Music, a reboot of their career-defining film series more than two decades after its last installment. But for their next act, they decided to take a left turn from sunny SoCal and head somewhere a little more dignified: Broadway. The duo approached producer and director Jamie Lloyd, known for recent revivals of Sunset Boulevard and Evita, to see if he might be interested in trying his hand at the Samuel Beckett existentialist classic Waiting for Godot. “It was Keanu‘s idea to do it, and while we knew it would be a tall mountain to climb, it did feel playable,” Winter tells Rolling Stone. “Keanu and I had a desire to play these characters in a grounded way, and Jamie saw it the same way. We knew he would have brilliant ideas for how to present the play, and he didn’t disappoint.” While they’ve been cagey about the details of the show — “We don’t want to give away too much,” Reeves told Broadway Direct — they shared some behind the scenes images of rehearsals with Rolling Stone, revealing a stage and a vibe in which their teen stoner alter-egos would probably feel right at home.
