Morat, Camilo, and More Rock Out at SummerStage

SummerStage has been in full swing — and this month’s lineup featured a set of shows sponsored by the Latin Alternative Music Conference (LAMC), showcasing talent from all corners of the Latin music industry. On July 9, Colombian pop-rock band Morat filled up the Central Park event, with fans lining up hours before the performance to catch mega-hits like “Salir Con Vida,” “No Se Va,” and “Llamada Perdida” live.

The event hit capacity hours before Morat took the stage, with tons of people in the crowd touting signs and Colombian flags to rep the band’s home country. Before their headlining set, rising Argentine singer Yami Safdie enchanted the audience with her mellow pop sounds and acoustic singer-songwriter sensibilities. Then, the Bronx-bred Dominican duo Planta Industrial brought a little anarchy, showing off their raucous, totally unique mix of punk and metal and dembow.

Around 9 p.m., as the crowd chanted their name, the guys from Morat took the stage, launching the spectacle with their song “Faltas Tú.” Their fans sang along as though they’d memorized the entire setlist. Toward the end of the show, they packed in a little surprise: Colombian pop star Camilo jumped on the mic and sang with the guys. Camilo headlined SummerStage a few days later on Saturday night, playing another sold-out show that included a stunning opening performance from Colombian singer Ela Taubert.
