Americans aren’t happy with how Donald Trump and his administration are tanking the economy, gutting critical public services, deporting people without due process, and generally dismantling the federal government in order to consolidate power around the president. They have made their voices heard through a new wave of demonstrations borne out of a grassroots, leaderless movement meant to protest Trump’s second term in office. “50501” — named for the idea of 50 protests, taking place in 50 states, over the course of a single day in February — has grown far beyond its initial intention, inspiring a “Hands Off!” national day of action on April 5, and, most recently, hundreds of rallies across America on April 19. Demonstrators took to the street everywhere from Los Angeles, to Chicago, to Detroit, to New York, to Cocoa, Florida, They chanted, held up signs, and dressed in costume to signal their opposition to Trump’s authoritarian regime.
